July 29-31 Heart Lake to Shoshone Lake in Yellowstone National Park.
We put in for a backcountry permit for Shoshone Lake back in April so we could check out the Shoshone Geyser Basin which contains one of the highest concentrations of geysers in the world. It is loaded with hot springs and mudpots between the geyser basin and the lake.

The Hayden Geologic Survey of 1872 confirmed the lake was in the Snake River drainage and named the lake Shoshone Lake based on the Indian name of the Snake River. The lake is accessible by water via Lewis Lake and the Lewis River channel. Like Yellowstone lake, it can be dangerous to paddle due to the common occurrence of very high winds in the afternoon causing large waves to build up. It is believed that Shoshone Lake may be the largest lake in the lower 48 states that cannot be reached by road.
